Secondary Phase

Securing foundations. Shaping futures.

At The Orchard School, our Secondary Phase curriculum supports pupils in Years 7 to 11 — with a clear distinction between Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.

Many of our pupils transition into Key Stage 3 having experienced gaps in learning and disrupted relationships with education. That’s why we continue to use a primary-style model in Key Stage 3, where pupils remain with a consistent teaching team and small group environment. This allows us to maintain strong relationships, embed therapeutic support, and secure core academic skills before pupils begin formal accreditation.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9)

Rebuilding confidence. Embedding readiness.

  • Pupils follow a broad and balanced curriculum focused on core skills, emotional literacy and practical learning.
  • Consistency of staffing and environment helps build trust, reduce anxiety and develop learning routines.
  • A strong focus on reading, writing and maths ensures pupils are well prepared for the transition to KS4.
  • PSHE, regulation and social communication remain central to the school day.
  • Therapeutic interventions, learning mentor support, and EHCP-linked targets guide individual progress.

Reading Across Secondary

Reading is a whole-school priority. We know that literacy is the key to accessing learning — and life.

  • Pupils who need continued phonics support access Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, even in KS4.
  • We timetable regular DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) sessions to promote positive reading habits and fluency.
  • We assess reading three times per year using NGRT (New Group Reading Test) to monitor progress and personalise support.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10–11)

Developing independence. Opening doors.

In Key Stage 4, we offer flexible, personalised pathways that combine academic, vocational, and therapeutic learning to meet the needs of every pupil.

  • Core subjects include English, Maths and Science, with Entry Level, Functional Skills and GCSE routes as appropriate.
  • Pupils access a wide range of subjects including Art, PE, Computing, PSHE, Food Tech and Outdoor Learning.
  • Careers education, work-related learning and life skills help pupils prepare for further education and the world beyond school.

Support with transitions, post-16 planning and EHCP outcomes ensures pupils are ready to move forward with confidence and purpose.
