Wellbeing & Regulation Spaces

Safe places. Calm minds. Restored readiness.

At The Orchard School, we understand that emotional regulation is the foundation for learning, relationships and self-confidence. That’s why we offer dedicated Wellbeing and Regulation Spaces across the school, tailored to meet a range of sensory, emotional and developmental needs.

These spaces are more than just quiet rooms — they are trusted environments where pupils can access co-regulation, reset their emotional state and re-enter the learning day safely and with dignity.

Our Spaces Include:

  • Primary Regulation Rooms with sensory equipment, soft lighting and trusted adults
  • Secondary Wellbeing Zones for reflective, age-appropriate support
  • De-escalation and Recovery Rooms designed for safety and minimal stimulation
  • Outdoor Regulation Areas offering movement, nature and calm
  • Therapeutic 1:1 Spaces for scheduled interventions and key adult time

Why Pupils Use Them:

  • To reduce overwhelm or sensory overload
  • To prepare for transitions or changes in routine
  • To access emotional support after dysregulation
  • To practise co-regulation with a familiar adult
  • To reflect and repair following an incident

Guided by Trust, Not Isolation

Our regulation spaces are never used as punishment or isolation. Access is relational, supportive and pupil-led wherever possible. Staff are trained in Therapeutic Thinking and use the 4Rs (Regulate, Relate, Reason, Repair) to guide every interaction.

Journalling for Reflection

To embed emotional awareness and self-reflection, pupils take part in Wellbeing Journalling every Monday and Friday. These sessions help pupils:

  •  Reflect on their week – what went well and what felt challenging
  • Recognise and name their emotions
  • Celebrate personal successes and acts of kindness
  • Set small goals for the days ahead

Journalling provides a calm, structured opportunity for reflection and expression, supporting the development of emotional literacy and building ownership of personal growth.

Part of the Bigger Picture

Wellbeing and regulation are not just ‘breaks’ — they are part of a whole-school approach that teaches pupils how to recognise, understand and manage their emotions over time. These skills are fundamental to future success, independence and healthy relationships.
